O'Ree had met Jackie Robinson in person twice when he was growing up. In 1958 a young man named Willie O'Ree made his debut in the National Hockey League. O'Ree rejoined the Bruins in 1960-61 and played in 43 games that season. However, it wasn't until 1957 that the league accepted their first Black player, Wilie O'Ree. He was with the Boston Bruins for two games. Willie Eldon O'Ree was born on October 15, 1935, in the city of Fredericton. O'Ree's NHL career, albeit brief, opened the door for other players of various races to dream about NHL careers. In 1961, after two more years in the minors, O'Ree had a longer stay with the Bruins--41 games.
